Google Expands Availability and Lowers Prices on Compute Engine Cloud Services

Google does everything, including offering Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) with itscloud Google Compute Engine. The service is just nine months old, and Google is already rapidly adding new features, increasing availability, and cutting prices.

The Google Compute Engine is now available to anyone who signs up for a Gold support package (which costs $400 a month), and the service now includes two new zones in Europe. Google also reduced the cost for using the service by 4%.

The company now offers a Google Cloud Console to let users manage all of their Google Platform services from a single interface; that’s just the tip of the iceberg in terms of new features, though.

Google added the ability to boot from persistent disks whether mounted as a file system or as a snapshot, persistent disk checkpoint and restore capabilities, and the ability to attach and detach persistent disks from an instance that is currently running.

There are also five new types of instance families, easier migration for virtual machines between zones, and an enhanced metadata server.

Because Google is Google, they also threw in a treat called the World Wide Maze Chrome Experiment. Google describes it thusly: “This game converts any web site of your choice into an interactive, three dimensional maze, navigated remotely via your smartphone. Compute Engine virtual machines run Node.js to manage the game state and synchronization with the mobile device, while Google App Engine hosts the game’s web UI.”

Basically, it’s a goofy toy that shows off the kind of back end services that Google’s Cloud Platform can offer--but it’s also enchanting, clever, and funny.

Dell Alienware X51 Ubuntu Gaming Desktop

It wasn't all that long ago that mainstream gaming on Linux was virtually unheard of. Sure, solutions like WINE have been around for awhile now, but it's only recently that developers and gamers alike have truly started to embrace Linux as a viable platform. Even Dell is getting in on the action by announcing a lower priced version of its Alienware X51 with Ubuntu.

The Alienware X51 is a small form factor gaming PC about the size of an Xbox 360 console, only much more powerful and flexible. We were so impressed with the machine that we gave it an Editor's Choice award at the conclusion of our autopsy (check out the full review).

If you're willing to trade Windows for Ubuntu, you'll save a Benjamin with a starting price of $599. On the hardware side, the entry-level model sports a dual-core Intel Core i3 3220 processor clocked at 3.3GHz, 6GB of DDR3-1600MHz memory, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 645 graphics card, 1TB hard drive (7200 RPM), slot-load DVD burner, built-in Wi-Fi, and various other accoutrements. Higher end configurations are available.

Alienware X51 Ubuntu

The Alienware X51 is first and foremost a gaming machine, and as such, Dell says the system comes with supported drivers from NVIDIA so that you can game right away. In addition, Dell is pushing Valve's Steam platform pretty hard.

"You can easily install Steam onto the machine. Though many games are not yet supported, including most of the AAA releases, the list is continuing to grow and now includes classics such as Team Fortress 2 and Serious Sam," Dell states in a blog post. "You can check out the list of Steam games here. The highlight for the Steam integration is that it supports Big Picture Mode. The versatility and small size of the X51 made it easy to disconnect the system from the monitor in my office and connect it to my TV."

This is a big step for Linux, especially as it pertains to gaming. Game support is still a weak spot, but now that a major OEM is on board, it could encourage game developers and publishers to take Linux a little more seriously.

Windows Blue To Be Released as "Windows 8.1"

Microsoft's annual BUILD conference is coming up soon, and while Windows Phone will no doubt have a role, desktop Windows users will surely want to pay attention as well. Windows 8 has been around the block at this point, with some aspects of it being quite pleasing and others leaving critics wanting. So, what's Microsoft to do? An update, of course. Windows 8.1 is rumored to be just around the bend, with a code-name of "Blue."

But here's the thing: does this signal the end of those service packs from yesteryear, and a new start for Microsoft's OS releases (similar to how Apple rolls things out with cheap, albeit not free updates)?

The point update is an unusual name change for Microsoft, and it could usher in a new way of updating its OS, and perhaps a different way of counting licenses. While the death of Service Packs may be disheartening (or, even the thought of it), keeping a planned schedule of releases coming -- even if it costs a bit -- might not be so bad. After all, you can only expect so much from free.
